Established in 2010, the James McNeill Whistler Distinguished Art Award recognizes the contributions, achievements, and talent of an individual or organization that has consistently demonstrated leadership, innovation, progressive thinking, and the highest level of excellence in their work; promoting, enhancing, and educating, while advancing the world of art for the citizens of today and tomorrow.
James McNeill Whistler, one of America’s premier 19th-century artists, created and developed new techniques in painting and printmaking, which had a major impact on both his contemporaries and future artists. The recipient of the James McNeill Whistler Distinguished Art Award follows in the footsteps of this most prominent and inspiring artist. For Whistler, it was always about beauty: beauty of design, of line, of color. To Whistler, art and beauty were inseparable.
As Joseph Pennell, friend and biographer of Whistler wrote in Life of Whistler, “His name and his fame will live forever.” We believe that the recipients of the James McNeill Whistler Distinguished Art Award will also be remembered for their extraordinary contributions to the world of art.
2022 – Nancy L. Donahue
On June 24, 2022, the Whistler House Museum of Art proudly honored community activist, humanitarian, and philanthropist Nancy L. Donahue with the James McNeill Whistler Distinguished Art Award. An exhibition, titled Lowell: My Hometown, accompanied the Gala celebration.
2017 – James Costos
On April 19, 2017, the Whistler House Museum of Art proudly honored U.S. Ambassador to Spain and Andorra James Costos with the James McNeill Whistler Distinguished Art Award. An exhibition, titled Lowell: A Homecoming, accompanied the Gala celebration.
2010 – Mico Kaufman
On October 17, 2010, the Whistler House Museum of Art proudly honored sculptor Mico Kaufman as the first recipient of the James McNeill Whistler Distinguished Art Award. An exhibition, titled Mico Kaufman: From the Minuscule to the Monumental, accompanied the Gala celebration.
The Methuen Festival of Trees, Inc. (FOT) is a private, non-profit organization located in Methuen, Massachusetts. The organization raises money through the annual Festival of Trees to fund historic preservation and restoration in the Merrimack Valley, southern New Hampshire and beyond. Since 1994, the FOT has provided close to $2 million for various historic preservation projects, including the Whistler House Museum of Art
