 Physical Description/Subject Matter

This beautiful wintery scene depicts the small coastal village of Rockport, Massachusetts located on Cape Ann. A road covered in snow winds between trees and rocks in the foreground with a green and orange house in the mid-ground. The background has a large body of water — the Atlantic Ocean — with more buildings and a few church steeples along the distant coast. Hibbard painted many Rockport scenes, particularly winter scenes. Hibbard was a founding member of the Rockport Art Association, which still serves as a center for the creative community on Cape Ann.
