The Whistler House Museum of Art is seeking volunteers, docents, and interns interested in the 200-year-old historic house, birthplace of famous American artist James McNeill Whistler!
Volunteering at the Whistler House Museum of Art is an opportunity to immerse yourself in art and history, learn new skills, and meet artists in the community. The WHMA seeks to connect audiences of all ages and backgrounds to the wider art world and your role as a volunteer will place you in the center of it all, playing an active part in the success of the Museum and its mission. Volunteers perform a unique form of philanthropy that supports the WHMA, our visitors, and the local community.

Volunteer
As a docent, volunteers will lead tours of the museum and engage visitors with the extensive collection of 19th- and 20th-century art. Volunteers may also aid in special projects and events, assist in maintaining the house and grounds, and lend administrative support when needed. A formal background in history is not required, only an interest in art and an enthusiasm to learn. Docents will be trained by staff and volunteers, who wish to share their love of the Museum with others.
The WHMA will work with volunteers to create a customized schedule that works best during the museum’s hours of operations, Wednesday through Saturday, 11am to 4pm. If you are interested in joining the Whistler House Family, please fill out the Volunteer Form below!
Internships
Learn about the inner workings of an international renowned historic house and museum while interning with the Whistler House Museum of Art, the birthplace of famous American artist James McNeill Whistler and the home of the Lowell Art Association!
Interns will work with a diverse group of staff and volunteers on all aspects of the museum, including exhibitions, events, educational programs, arts administration, and operations. Tasks may include: assisting during gallery openings and other events, assisting with the Youth Summer Art Program in July – August, giving tours of the historic house, supporting membership, researching works of art, aiding in upkeep of the museum to ensure the best visitor experience for our guests, and more.
The schedule is flexible and can be adapted to best fit the intern’s requirements and time. Interns are able to complete their hours Tuesday to Saturdays from 10am to 4pm, with additional hours available to aid with exciting evening events, including lectures, concerts, and educational and community programs. For interns working with the Youth Summer Art Program, 9am to noon hours are available Monday through Friday, from July to the first week of August.
