 Biography
Born in Falmouth, Massachusetts, Aldro Hibbard grew up in the suburbs of Boston. He loved baseball and art but chose the latter as his career path. In 1906, Hibbard enrolled at the Massachusetts Normal Art School (now the Massachusetts College of Art and Design). After graduating in 1909, he enrolled at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (now located at Tufts) to continue his studies. While there, he studied under Frank Weston Benson, Phillip Leslie Hale, and Charles Edmund Tarbell. These three artists were instructors in the growing school of American Impressionism. Upon graduation in 1913, Hibbard was awarded the Museum of Fine Arts Paige Traveling Scholarship, allowing him to continue learning his craft in Europe, including England, France, Spain, Morocco, and Italy and gravitating toward town and landscape imagery.

After returning to the United States in 1914, he established himself quickly as a talented New England artist. His trips to snow-covered Vermont led to paintings of idyllic, rural New England scenes depicting common winter activities in these small Vermont villages. Between 1920 and 1966, Hibbard was awarded many awards for his works. He arrived in Rockport, Massachusetts in 1919 where the coast continued inspiring him. His legacy is honored through the Rockport Art Association, which he established and served as Director from 1921 to 1928. He taught painting to artists for decades and encouraged them to see the beauty of New England in coastal villages and snow.
