Meet the Whistler House Museum of Art's January Artist of the Month:

Magdalene Stathas

Born and raised in Massachusetts, Magdalene Stathas was awestruck visiting the Whistler House Museum of Art as a child. During her elementary school’s art program, Magdalene found herself frequently painting alongside stunning works of art at the Museum while growing up. Now as the Whistler House’s current Artist-in-Resident, Magdalene Stathas's skill rivals the artists hanging on the 200-year-old walls.

Appreciating classical art awakened a deep longing in Magdalene to utilize her own artistic gifts, connecting the world’s intrinsic beauty to people around her. Through contemporary forms infused with knowledge of traditional art, she captures fleeting light and ethereal beauty, evoking feelings of peace we have all experienced while amazed by the gorgeous simplicity of nature. She credits her love of creating to her great-grandfather, who left behind his life in Egypt due to persecution; in Crete, Greece, he attracted art lovers from around the world with his paintings and charming character.

Dedicating her life towards inspiring others, Magdalene holds degrees in Psychology, Fine Art, and French from UMASS Lowell, where she received the Bernard Restuccia Award of Excellence in Painting and the UMass Department of Psychology Excellence Award. During her undergraduate studies, she served as a mentor for young men on the autism spectrum. In 2019, she received the honor of Emerging Scholar for her contributions as a research assistant for Save Venice Inc. Founded in Boston, the organization has raised over 30 million dollars and restored over 450 works of Venetian art and architecture. Following graduation, Magdalene served as a Fine Arts educator for two years, overseeing the development of six hundred students and creating two new curricula for the arts.

A deep love for classical art has always been at the center of her professional pursuits. Over the years, this passion led her backpacking throughout Europe and compelled her to move to Italy, where she became a classical art atelier under the instruction of renowned master painter Maestro Michael John Angel. After a prolific year of studying classical drawing and anatomy in Florence, Magdalene became a teaching assistant to Maestro Angel in an international William-Adolphe Bouguereau workshop for classical impasto and glazing.

Living in Massachusetts once again, Magdalene has returned to the Whistler House Museum of Art which inspired her as a child, now honored to serve as the Artist-in-Resident. She can often be found working in the museum’s third floor studio, where she loves meeting and connecting with visitors and international artists. Currently fluctuating between human and animal portraits as well as miniature landscapes, she is working on a large-scale narrative showcasing themes of love, childhood simplicity, compassion, repentance, and humanity. Magdalene believes “joy is loving others more than yourself; art is a gift we should share to evoke the simplicity of beauty and peace with others.”

Meet the Whistler House Museum of Art's December Artist of the Month:

Todd M. Casey

Born and raised in Lowell, MA, Todd M. Casey is fascinated by the history and culture of colonial America. Through his travels through historic cities, he is inspired by the richness of vintage objects and incorporates the myriad of items and antiquated narratives he collects into his paintings.

Todd’s artistic education includes a BFA in Communication Design from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, MA. He then moved to New York City, where he worked as a Graphic Designer before pursuing a Masters in Animation at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, CA. While taking the foundation classes for his MFA, he found his true passions lied with painting, and so he returned to the studio of Jacob Collins at the Water Street Atelier in New York City to begin his training in classical painting.

Touching on more than simplistic, rigid realism, there is a haunting, nearly literary quality to each frame of Todd’s work. He imbues each with a feeling that subjects are viewed from behind rain-kissed, mottled glass, burnished by enigmatic candlelight, or brushed by the soft, hazy edges of a half-remembered dream. Todd creates classically styled paintings, but with a progressive approach in fine, somber details, rendered with a clear, meticulous eye. Drawing inspiration from classical art, historical literature, and personal experience, Todd’s aesthetic is known for its subtlety, refined grace, meditation, and honesty.

His paintings have been honored with awards several times in his career. Todd won first four times at the Portrait Society of America’s Members Only Competition and placed first in oil painting from the Allied Artists of America in 2015. His work can be found in collections throughout the world, including the Rehs Contemporary Gallery in New York, NY and the Simie Maryles Gallery in Provincetown, MA.

Recently, Todd made the transition from painter to author and teacher, publishing The Art of Still Life in 2020 and The Oil Painters’ Color Handbook in 2022 with Monacelli Studio. Todd teaches classes for the Massachusetts College of Art and the Academy of Art University Online, the Art Students League of New York, and through private online classes and workshops.

Todd Casey lives in Connecticut with his wife Gina and daughter Scarlet. When he is not working in his home studio or preparing for gallery events, he reads Joseph Campbell, Paulo Coelho, and Eckhardt Tolle, watches Woody Allen movies, and toils in his garden—when the weather allows.

Meet the Whistler House Museum of Art's November Artist of the Month:

Lynne B. Mehlman

Drawn to the beauty of nature, Lynne Mehlman has been painting her entire life. As a first-grade student in Japan, she won a prize for her painting of the captivating cherry blossoms in her neighborhood. Throughout her school years she continued to receive encouragement, taking as many art classes as she could, from ceramics to calligraphy to lithography.

However, it was not until she met Robert Cormier that she found the intensive training she desired. Cormier, an instructor of the R.H. Ives Gammell Studios in Boston, MA instructed Lynne for four years. She then furthered her studies with Paul Ingbretson for more than five years in Manchester, NH. Both artists were former students of Gammell, the internationally-renowned American painter and former president of the Guild of Boston Artists.

Her training consisted of two major components: drawing and painting, and learning to see. Ingbretson calls this “painting in the visual order,” in the tradition of the Boston School of Painting; Cormier called it the impressionistic approach. Lynne found truth in Gammell’s words: “A student’s progress seems to him like the falling of successive scales from his eyes… It is only after his eyes have acquired a fairly high degree of sensitivity—that he can paint fairly well—that a student realizes the overwhelming difficulty of painting.”

Lynne’s oil paintings capture vibrant colors and light in her elegantly composed arrangements. She strives to accurately depict nature, while leaving a sense of mystery in the shadows and of wonder for the beauty around her. Lynne favors fruits and florals for her still lifes because of their diverse hues and shapes, as well as adding visual magic to everyday objects. Her goal is to express more with less, to work towards poetry instead of prose.

Lynne has won many awards and has numerous works in private collections. She is a member of the Rockport Art Association & Museum, the Lowell Art Association, Inc./Whistler House Museum of Art, and the Guild of Boston Artists, where she is currently the Vice President of the Board of Managers. Additionally, she participates in regional and international competitions at the Art Renewal Center, the Oil Painters of America, the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, and the Academic Artists Association. To complement her solitary painting lifestyle, she volunteers with art organizations close to her heart. While residing in Lowell, MA, Lynne has a studio in Lawrence, where she carefully observes nature from north light.
