Meet the Whistler House Museum of Art's December Artist of the Month:

Dave Drinon

Dave’s passion is painting “en plein air” throughout all of the beautiful seasons of the year. From the rocky coast of Maine, down through Gloucester, Cape Ann and Rocky Point, down to the Southshore and the Cape, Dave is prolific in his talent.

He was born in Maine, but grew up with an artistic family to inspire his creative energy. His mother was an avid watercolorist and his brother, Bob Drinon was one of the Old Port Painters of the '70s and '80s out of Portland, Maine. Although Dave had an interest and a talent in art, he decided to pursue a 32-year career in finance. In 2010 he made the decision to transition from an office and successful career as a financial advisor to a career painting as a full-time artist outdoors, much to the benefit of the art-loving public.

Dave studied studio painting at the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester NH under the guidance of Patrick McCay, currently the Chair of the Visual Arts Department at the New Hampshire Institute of Art. Dave paints in the inspirational tradition of the Boston and Cape Ann painters of the late 1800s and early 1900s. He has had the privilege of studying with prominent and well-known Cape Ann painters Stapleton Kearns and David Curtis, as well as Boston and Nantucket painter Thomas R Dunlay.

Dave’s works are owned by individual collectors throughout the country as well as institutions such as Lowell City Hall, Enterprise Bank, Boston Partners Financial Group, Lahey Clinic, Lowell Community Health Center, MKtix company, Ripple on the Water Restaurant and Florida Craft Distributors, just to name a few. He has exhibited at the Boston Guild of Boston Artist, Bristol Art Museum, Massachusetts State House, Whistler House Museum of Art, Andover Historical Society, Bank Gloucester, and the New Hampshire Institute of Art among many others.

Dave was selected and enjoyed the reputation of being an Artist-In-Residence at the Whistler House Museum of Art in 2015 and 2016, where he perfected his talent even further. His enthusiasm and support benefited the organization and the community tremendously.  He is a juried artist member of the Rockport Art Association and Museum; The Northshore Arts Association; and is an accepted member of the Copley Art Society in Boston. He is also an artist member of the Lowell Art Association and the Whistler House Museum of Art. Dave was selected as a featured artist for the 2020 and 2021 Cape Ann Plein Air Festival featuring forty artists from all over the country for the weeklong annual event. He serves on the Board of Trustees for the North Shore Arts Association and as a board member of the Arts Institute Group of Merrimack Valley.

Dave now maintains a north light studio at the Western Ave Studios and is an important member of the arts community in New England.
