Meet the Whistler House Museum of Art's March Artist of the Month:

Pamela Wamala

Pamela Wamala is a contemporary artist focused on connecting with and uplifting those who appreciate art. She was born in Massachusetts and trained with her maternal grandfather from the time she was five. During high school, she had the unique opportunity to study with realist painter Scott Prior. That experience set her on the dedicated pursuit of working as an artist. Wamala received her BFA in Drawing and Painting from University of Massachusetts, Lowell in 1987.

Wamala uses a variety of paint mediums, as well as collage, poetry, short form writing through her blog, and her YouTube Channel to teach about her art and ideas. Her offerings have been shown widely in the region and are collected by individual art enthusiasts and corporations. Wamala’s art is included in homes and offices throughout the United States, Germany, and China. Notably, the Whistler House Museum of Art hosted Wamala’s solo exhibition, “Peace of the Sea” in 2016.

Pamela creates collections that focus on the beauty of the land, the light on the sea, the love of flowers, the dynamism of the figure, and the symbolism of abstract forms. During 2020 Wamala revisited her roots as a plein air painter, creating a body of work inspired by the waterways just steps from her Gates Block Studio in Lowell, MA. These pastel paintings embody the life giving energy of being in nature while creating. This collection is currently available through her website.

Most recently Wamala is incorporating figures into her paintings. Using mixed media techniques she adds the figurative gesture drawings that she captured during her Summer, 2020 walks about town. These pieces are part of “La Bella Luna Collection” and point in a new direction that Wamala plans to follow for the near future.

In addition, she has just completed her latest series of works entitled "Moonlit Memories". The soul of this collection falls within the Chinese characters included with each of the works. Incorporating this lettering came from decades of Yoga practice, centered around the greeting "namaste". The greeting “namaste”, as well as the act of placing palms together, is used both as a hello and goodbye in the practice of Yoga. The incorporation of the figures together with the lettering is to show appreciation and respect for humanity and nature through art.

Wamala works as a full time artist in her Gates Block Studio, Lowell, MA. She regularly participates in group exhibitions and invitational shows, as well as the occasional solo, two, and three person shows.
