Physical Description/Subject Matter | ||
In this marine scene, a sloop floats in the canvas with the sails extending to the upper quarter of the painting. A sloop is a one-masted sailboat with one headsail and one mainsail. The sloop cuts through choppy waves with small boats in the distance. The blue sky is dominated by large billowing clouds. Hibbard uses large, thick brushstrokes to create the waves and sky which contrasts with the smooth blending of the sail and ship. |
