Meet the Whistler House Museum of Art's October Artist of the Month:

Priscilla Levesque

Since she was a small child in Ashburnham, MA, Priscilla Levesque has been creating art. Starting with arts and crafts, she quickly utilized all the supplies her parents provided for her—paper, crayons, paint, and clay—always asking for more. This childhood love for art encouraged her to seek a BFA at UMASS Amherst following high school.

Moving to Cataumet, a village in Bourne on Cape Cod, Priscilla became a diligent painter of watercolor landscapes. Soon thereafter, her work was exhibited at the Cataumet Arts Center, the Falmouth Art Center, the Woods Hole Gallery, Gallery 333, and many others. She honed her craft by taking classes and workshops with several artists, including Claude Croney, Beverley Edwards, Sig Purwin, Selina Trieff, Rosalie Nadeau, and Maris Platais.

Taking inspiration from 19th century landscape artists such as Camille Pissaro, Georges Seurat, and Paul Signac, Priscilla employs pointillist techniques. Developed by the French artist Georges Seurat in the 1880s, pointillism is accomplished through the building up of color by juxtaposing tiny dots of various hues, which merge together when seen at a distance. With this technique of “optical mixing,” the color mixtures occur in the eyes rather than on the palette, emphasizing surface texture and decorative pattern over three-dimensional space. Priscilla is inspired by the works of Maurice Denis, who stated: “Remember that a picture, before being a battle horse, a nude, an anecdote, or whatnot, is essentially a flat surface covered with colors assembled in a certain order”.

After moving to Lowell, MA, Priscilla rented space at the Western Avenue Studios and Lofts Complex. During this time, she shifted from using watercolors to casein, an opaque water-based paint. Casein’s translucent and fast-drying qualities appeal to Levesque, who is always looking to adapt, change, and enhance her works.

Priscilla is represented in several New England Galleries and collections, and is affiliated with the Concord Art Association, the Falmouth Artists Guild, the Provincetown Art Association, and the Lowell Art Association, Inc./Whistler House Museum of Art. Most recently, her work was exhibited at the Wright Gallery in Kennebunk-Port ME, Stamm and Black Interior Design in West Acton, MA, and Picture Yourself Gallery and Framing in Chelmsford, MA. When she is not searching for inspiration along the canals of Lowell, Priscilla can be found working in Studio 251 at Western Ave. in Lowell, MA.

Meet the Whistler House Museum of Art's September Artist of the Month:

Dennis Lucas

A traditional impressionist painter, Dennis Lucas' work focuses on the ever-changing light and its effects on color in nature. What matters most to him is being in the moment and expressing the gorgeous light and beauty of the four seasons.

Dennis began drawing and painting at a young age, producing works of art while viewing creatively inspired children’s education programs. While attending Arlington High School, he was voted Best Artist among his fellow students and he continued his artistic training at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. He became inspired by Impressionist painters Vincent Van Gogh, John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, and Mary Cassatt, although his favorite remains Claude Monet.

His love for Impressionist works drew him to the Cape School of Art in Provincetown, MA. The school, inspired by the French Impressionists and known for its colorful plein-air painting method, was established over one hundred years ago. Lucas immediately adapted to this style of painting while living, working, and practicing his craft on Cape Cod.

Currently, he is an artist and teacher at the Cape School of Art. Dennis guides young artists through painting, sharing his love of art and inspiring the works of others. Previously, he taught in Continuing Education in Arlington and Lexington, MA. When he is not creating art or instructing others, Dennis volunteers his time as a caregiver for the elderly.

Dennis paints and exhibits throughout New England and has conducted many workshops in the great outdoors. Whether on the streets of France, Italy, around historic Boston, Provincetown, or the green mountains of Vermont, he uses his palette to create luminous impressionist paintings.

A former Artist-In-Residence at the historic Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, MA., Denis’ work is in many public and private collections. He is an active member of the Boston Guild of Artists, The Current Gallery, the Cutter Gallery, the Lowell Art Association, Inc., and the Whistler House Museum of Art. His work has been exhibited at the Center for Arts and Learning in Montpelier, VT, the Cutter Gallery in Arlington, MA, and the Whistler House Museum of Art’s Parker Gallery. Currently, Lucas is exhibiting at the Sarah Jessica Gallery in Provincetown, MA. He lives in Montpelier, VT, painting the light as it passes over the green hills and mountains.

Dennis Lucas is a proud artist member of the Whistler House Museum of Art.

May 2022

Meet the Whistler House Museum of Art's May Artist of the Month:

Nancy Lesofsky

A person of many talents and areas of knowledge, Nancy Lesofsky's steps into her creative art career began at nine years old, when her father—a talented artist himself—gifted her a large wooden box with the best brushes and paints he could find. Her mother was a dress designer and seamstress, expanding her education in art even further.

She began her training under the classical tutelage of Madame Thellen in Lowell, Massachusetts. Influenced by such artists as Michelangelo, Leonardo de Vinci, John Singer Sargeant, and her favorite, Gustav Klimt, she has created her own unique art style. Artistically talented from the beginning, her work was exhibited in the Whistler House Museum of Art at an early age.

Nancy sought to expand her craft to more forms of art and various art styles through the education of many other artists. She studied with renowned local artist Janet Lambert Moore, who has shown a lifetime of work at the Whistler House Museum of Art. Additionally, under the guidance of Beth Patterson, an award-winning contributor to national magazines and hardcover books, Nancy studied watercolor techniques. To expand her study of various mediums, she studied sculpting under the maestro and award-winning sculptor, Roneld Lores of Cuba, who also now resides in Lowell.

A motivational speaker and instructor, Nancy was assigned to serve on the Board of Directors for “Very Special Arts,” an organization established to benefit artists with physical and mental disabilities. In addition, she was also elected the President of Renaissance Fine Arts. Both of the organizations are located in Washington, DC. She also was invited to be the CEO of the New York City-based company International Institute of Learning and Advancement.

In addition to her career as an artist, Nancy has been an award-winning International Interior Designer for 54 years and was selected to the prestigious Boston Junior League designers. She was also recently honored with a bronze medal from the International French Order of Arts-Sciences-Lattres in Paris, France. In October of 1992, she appeared for an interview on Channel 7News with journalist Sara Edwards as one of the top female entrepreneurs in the country.

Nancy is a proud artist member of the Whistler House Museum of Art.
