Meet the Whistler House Museum of Art's May Artist of the Month:

Nancy Lesofsky

A person of many talents and areas of knowledge, Nancy Lesofsky's steps into her creative art career began at nine years old, when her father—a talented artist himself—gifted her a large wooden box with the best brushes and paints he could find. Her mother was a dress designer and seamstress, expanding her education in art even further.

She began her training under the classical tutelage of Madame Thellen in Lowell, Massachusetts. Influenced by such artists as Michelangelo, Leonardo de Vinci, John Singer Sargeant, and her favorite, Gustav Klimt, she has created her own unique art style. Artistically talented from the beginning, her work was exhibited in the Whistler House Museum of Art at an early age.

Nancy sought to expand her craft to more forms of art and various art styles through the education of many other artists. She studied with renowned local artist Janet Lambert Moore, who has shown a lifetime of work at the Whistler House Museum of Art. Additionally, under the guidance of Beth Patterson, an award-winning contributor to national magazines and hardcover books, Nancy studied watercolor techniques. To expand her study of various mediums, she studied sculpting under the maestro and award-winning sculptor, Roneld Lores of Cuba, who also now resides in Lowell.

A motivational speaker and instructor, Nancy was assigned to serve on the Board of Directors for “Very Special Arts,” an organization established to benefit artists with physical and mental disabilities. In addition, she was also elected the President of Renaissance Fine Arts. Both of the organizations are located in Washington, DC. She also was invited to be the CEO of the New York City-based company International Institute of Learning and Advancement.

In addition to her career as an artist, Nancy has been an award-winning International Interior Designer for 54 years and was selected to the prestigious Boston Junior League designers. She was also recently honored with a bronze medal from the International French Order of Arts-Sciences-Lattres in Paris, France. In October of 1992, she appeared for an interview on Channel 7News with journalist Sara Edwards as one of the top female entrepreneurs in the country.

Nancy is a proud artist member of the Whistler House Museum of Art.

April 2022

Meet the Whistler House Museum of Art's April Artist of the Month:

John Brickels

John Brickels is a ceramic artist who lives in Lowell, Massachusetts. He was raised in Akron, Ohio, and attended the University of Akron. Every morning, he would ride along the streets of Akron to school and would watch the many houses and factories pass by in his rear-view mirror. With each building he passed by daily, his fascination with architecture grew and sparked the inspiration for his works." As an art form sculpture lets you design four sides instead of one. I like that."

He sculpts architecturally-themed sculptures that show the effects of time, weatherization, and entropy. He also creates artwork that reflects factory and machine imagery of his childhood Rust-Belt home, Akron, Ohio. Since moving to Lowell 5 years ago, John has enjoyed sculpting mill buildings using red terracotta clay.

John has exhibited his works internationally and showcased his work with the Smithsonian Institute, the Shelburne Museum in Vermont, and the Springfield Museum Group in Springfield, Massachusetts. The City of San Antonio, Texas, commissioned John to create sculptures of the Spanish Missions that were presented to visited dignitaries such as President George Bush Senior, King Juan Carlos of Spain, Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain, Placid Domingo, and Pope John Paul II. He is a member of the Whistler House Museum of Art and has been on exhibition there.

March 2022

Meet the Whistler House Museum of Art's March Artist of the Month:

Glenn Szegedy

Glenn Szegedy is a Lowell area artist who has been creating art for the last 20 years. Retiring early from a human services career, Glenn went back to school at the age of 40 and received his BFA in drawing and sculpture from the University of New Hampshire.

A longtime resident of Lowell, he now lives in Dracut, Massachusetts, where he works from a home studio. A resident of Western Ave Studios for 10 years, he now prefers the privacy and quiet of working from his home studio. He has a long history of exhibiting work throughout New England and has many works in private collections.
Glenn has had the opportunity to curate several exhibitions throughout the state. He also held the curatorial position at the Loading Dock Gallery for several years. Teaching has been a passion of Glenn's and he has had many opportunities to do so in the Lowell area including the Youth Summer Art Program at the Whistler House Museum of Art and at special classes at Community Teamwork (CTI).

Over the years, Glenn’s creative work has varied from sculpture and ceramics to printmaking and painting in addition to other forms of artwork. He has spent the last 3 years discovering portrait work.

While creating the images from "The Power of One" show, he said “I slowly began to see the importance and beauty of individuals, not beauty queens, nor billionaires or movie stars, but everyday people who create the rich, diverse communities we live in. Lowell has a wonderful, varied community with faces that create beautiful portraits."

Along with his portrait work, Glenn is also an avid gardener and landscaper. He plans on continuing to divide his time between his love of working outside and his creation of all different art forms.

He is a member of the Whistler House Museum of Art and the Brush Gallery.
