Admission to the Whistler House Museum of Art includes tours of the fourteen-room, historic house and entry to all special exhibitions.
Docent-led tours are offered daily every hour, with the final tour at 3 pm. Guests are also welcome to view the Historic House and Parker Gallery at their leisure with a self-guided tour.
Special arrangements must be made for larger groups (4 or more). Please call 978-452-7641 or email info@whistlerhouse.org to discuss availability and schedule your visit.

By Public Transit
The MBTA Commuter Rail Service is available from Boston’s North Station to Lowell’s Gallagher Terminal through the Lowell Line. The Whistler House Museum of Art is a ~20 minute walk from Gallagher Terminal.
From the Kennedy Center, there are several buses that run through Downtown Lowell, including:
The shuttle stop is at the corner of Dutton and Broadway, a ~5 minute walk to the Whistler House Museum of Art.
Parking Options
Free street parking is available on the left side of Worthen Street.
Additionally, there is metered parking on Dummer Street and in the Dummer Street Lot (entrance at 366 Market Street), which is located to the rear of the museum.
Finally, the Hamilton Canal Innovation District (HCID) Municipal Parking Facility is located at 350 Dutton Street. A ~5 minute walk across the canal from the Whistler House Museum of Art, guests will need to validate their parking at the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center.
What is the Card to Culture Program?
The Whistler House Museum of Art is proud to participate in the Card to Culture Program, a collaboration between Mass Cultural Council and the Department of Transitional Assistance, Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Nutrition Program, and Massachusetts Health Connector, which seeks to break down financial barriers to cultural programming.
EBT, WIC, and ConnectorCare cardholders receive free admission to historic house tours and exhibitions for up to 2 adults & children under 18. Is there a discount for Acre residents?
The Whistler House Museum of Art is historically part of the Acre Neighborhood District, one of Lowell’s earliest ethnic neighborhoods which reflects the diversity of cultures from over 170 years of migration. All residents of Lowell’s Acre Neighborhood — including children, adults, and seniors — can tour the Whistler House Museum of Art free of charge. As our neighbors, residents of the Acre have always received free admission to our tours, exhibitions, lectures, and concerts.
Is the museum open during holidays, snow, and rental events?
The Whistler House Museum of Art will notify visitors of a closure on our website and social media platforms, which may be due to federal holidays, inclement weather, or a special event.
The museum follows the Lowell Public School System regarding closures due to inclement weather, but you may call the museum to inquire on snowy days when planning your visit.
What’s the museum photography policy?
Photography Policy
Photography and video taken with handheld devices of objects in the permanent collection are NOT ALLOWED without written consent from WHMA. The use of flashes in the galleries is strictly prohibited. Any other camera equipment, including tripods, requires special permission.
Photographs or videos may not be reproduced, published, distributed, sold, or otherwise commercially used without written permission from WHMA.
For formal portraits, event photography, or any commissioned photography, prior written approval from WHMA is required.
Requests for permission can be sent to info@whistlerhouse.org. Please allow up to 3 weeks for review and consideration. Same-day requests may not be considered or approved.
Can I draw in the galleries?
Yes! The Whistler House Museum of Art is home to the Lowell Art Association, the oldest incorporated art association in the United States. We encourage guests to draw in the gallery spaces using graphite and colored pencils only. Other materials, including paint, pens, and charcoal, are permitted on a case-by-case basis. We ask that artists do not block passage through the Historic House or Parker Gallery. Stools are available upon request.
Can I use my membership card for admission?
Yes! Present your membership card to the docent at the front desk to explore the historic 200-year-old birthplace of James McNeill Whistler for free.

I haven’t received my membership card in the mail yet. Can I use my benefits?
Yes, you can enjoy your membership benefits immediately! Notify the docent at the front desk of your membership and we will confirm your status in our system.
